mea - I've been involved in a couple walk-a-thons and we did not actively solicit out of towners. Each student got a pledge sheet about 2 weeks before the walk-a-thon. The kids could approach out of town relatives, but we didn't do it for them. After the walk, they had 2 weeks to return their donations. When the money came in to the PTO, we didn't even want to know who the pledgers were. The pledge sheet was just for the student's use and was not returned to the PTO.
A couple years ago, I came across a professional walk-a-thon company who would send out solicitation letters to addresses you provided. I think they even tracked the returned solicitations. That approach didn't impress us for our PTO. It seemed too disconnected from the students and the school.
We are planning a walk-a-thon but don't know what to do regarding soliciting out-of-town family. What type of response have groups gotten when mailing donation request letters. Also, who pays for the postage?

Me too, if you dont mind. I would love to pitch this idea at our next PTO meeting and the more information you have to present, the better. I do like the ideas of selling ad space on t shirts, very clever! Any info you can pass along would be appreciated!

If anyone who has had the walk-a-thons and could share any information, flyers, ideas that we could use I would greatly appreciate it. I hope to have at least a plan together and put to the board for approval at our next meeting.

We did really good for our first walk-a-thon. We made over $5000.00. I also went to Walmart and filled out the paper work for a grant. Haven't heard anything yet. Keeping our fingers crossed.
