Wow. I have read through a lot of the responces and feel for you. I have to say reading through what is happening to you makes me very happy with our school board, super, and principal. I wish I had the answer for you. But I want to offer encouragement. I think that not giving up is the best defense you have. You are a person that seems to truly care about your child's school. It's ashame that more parents do not pay attention to where their children spend 3/4 of their day. I know it sounds crazy, but I tell my daughter's 3rd grade teacher all the time that she shapes her life more than I do. Lauren is with her from 7:45 until 3:00 everyday. While I have her in between, but it is the teachers/staff at that school that she looks up to. The school admin. need to realize they are our children's role models. And personally, I would much rather have her teacher as the one she looks up to, then some child movie star. They need to realize their impact.
Again, I wish I had some great words of wisdom as to what to do. All I can say is, do not be discouraged. You are making a huge difference in your son's schooling just by being involved.
This lady at another school in our district(saw her plight in the little local paper;I found her number and called her myself) just wanted a health plan filled out and asked JAN 5th!!!!!.
They discouraged from filling out a 504 form because it would upset the principal! Her son has had 2 reactions so far and they've had her and another mother come in taking turns at a supposed peanut- free table.They seem to not be taking any of this seriously!!! She has lots that could have been suggested so far and the latest thing she asked for has taken 4 weeks[can't remember what]and the 2 moms have spent 1,000$ on wipes of their own money.The superintendent refused to meet with her.
I am highly doubting they want to improve anything! I am seriously thinking school board but someone I talked to thinks it's the administration that something's fuzzy about.
I am going to put a huge bumper sticker on my car with 'Improve____ Now' website once i get one up and running!!!
Section 1118 of Title 1 subsection b the following are required: Each Title 1 school jointly develop with parents for all chldren served under this part a school-parent compact that outlines how parents, the entire school staff, and students will share responsibility or improved student academic achievement and the means by which the school and parents will build and develop a partnership to help children achieve the State's high standards. Such compact must - Describe the school's resonsibility to proved high quality CURRICULUM and INSTRUCTION in a supportive and effective learning enviornment that enables the children served under this part to meet the State's student academic achievement standards. Adress the importance of communication between teachers and parents on an ongoing basis through, at a minimum - parent teacher conferences in elementary school, at least annually, during which the compact shall be discussed as the compact relates to the indvidual child's achievement; frequent reports to parents on their child's progress, reasonable access to staff, opportunities to volunteer and participate in their child's class, and observation of classroom activities. This information can be found in the government publications on (I believe)gov.pubs. You can order certain copies of booklets to help you with the No Child Left Behind law and Title 1 laws. It is a lot of reading though. I hope this helps. It also has emphasis on Professional Development for teachers - Title II. Emphasis on What Works (using research to guide classroom practice). Has your school met adequate yearly progress? If not what phase are they in? I believe in phase 2 you can be offered school choice if your district has another school that has made (AYP).
I'm looking through my paperwork trying to find the part you need. Doesn't the school offer food substitutes for children with allergies to peanuts in your school lunch program? I'm from Michigan also.
I will leave but not before a HUGE stink.The peanut allergy lady has the local(bigger) news paper involved now!!!!And i told her to email the local "over"zealous lawyer too!!!! Thanks for the support!! My eyes have been opened and no on here is on the kids'side,I guess!!
