Will you be running for office this year?

Critter, thanks for the advice. We got together the other day for an hour and talked about the direction we'd like to see the group go and some general ideas. She just moved here last fall so she has some new ideas from their former school that we are planning on formulating for ours. We do need to hammer out the details of who will handle what. Guess I should start making a list! This is the first time we've had co-Prez for as long as I've been here(except for a short time after a Prez resigned because she was moving)so it will be all new territory for our group. Hope it's a positive experience becaue I think it's a lot easier to find people if the job can be shared.

Hey Rocky, watch me pull a rabbit out of my hat.

I have been the PTO Secretary for 3 years now, going on a 4th next year. No one wants to run, we have begged! The only position that nominations were accepted by those nominated was VP. Same two people ran again, same one lost. The only meeting people come to is when we vote on VP it seems.

Our Treasurer will be doing her 2nd year next year.
VP 2nd year.
Pres. is doing her second year and was VP for 2 years before that.

We had our nominations Tuesday night and as expected, there were no nominations other than for current board members except for VP. Our current VP did not want the position again, and we were able to talk two of our regular and very involved members into thinking about it. Neither was very enthusiastic but both knew they didn't want it to come to a vote. One lady just decided that she would withdraw her nomination, leading the way for the other. Our new VP, after a voice vote next week, is the wife of our school district's superintendent. She has been very active since they came here and we are all happy to have her on the board with us.

Critter, Those were my thoughts. But it sounds like some people can do it successfully. Hmmm, sounds like a new thead. LOL!

Luv - just one bit of advice if you go the "co-pres" route. Spend some time right away sorting out which one of you will do what. Is one the primary liaison to the principal? Is one the overseer of the committee heads? Who runs the meetings? Who takes the phone calls from the irate member? Who makes the final call on tough financial decisions?

It's nice that you'll both share things equally, since you're equal in authority. But in fact, sometimes having two chiefs can cause confusion, duplicate effort, or assumptions that mean important tasks are overlooked. Every decision must be double-checked by both of you. Every issue must be discussed twice. The principal must be careful about not leaving one of you out of the loop. Simple issues like which one of you approves the minutes can be a hassle if they are not worked out before the year starts.

Sharing a leadership role with another peer sounds like a good idea. Make sure it plays out that way by setting expectations for who does what as soon as you are elected.

After such encouragement from friends I am really excited about running now. Still don't know if I can win. I have a million ideas. I feel like the old me again! Hubby is less than enthusiastic. Maybe he can get in touch with Bertha's husband. Ha ha.
