I am in charge of ours. The school doesn't have anything to do with ours, other than they do link to us and we to them.
We chose to have a site of our own, because of the time & info constraints the district site has. We crashed a few weeks ago, but have had great success with using OrgSites! It's been very easy to learn and we have been able to utilize it for what we need.
We do not have our own website. But we just started a group on Yahoo. It works out well I can send out news, events, meetings, etc. Or they can go to the site and get info there. I have a calendar set up on it. Its worked out well and its very little maintenance.

We have our website through the school district. It cost us nothing and their IT person helps us if we have any problems. This is only our second year with it and it's still a work in progress.
That is ours. I update it. The district has nothing to say about it and they sure don't control it! But, we don't have anything not related to the PTO on it anyways.
I love orgsites because it is FREE and very easy to use!
