Question: Going back to being a PTO

Years ago, before my children became students at our school, our parent group was changed from a PTO, into something called the SSO (Summit School Organization.) Since I have become president, I have begun to explore the possibility of changing us back to a PTO. What do I do? My main reason for wanting to do so is that the tax exemption number we have always used, was reacently found to belong to the district, NOT to our school. We have to get our own, ASAP, and I was told that becoming a PTO was the best way. Where do we start?

I wonder if your group had an official name change but is still actually a PTO? Is that possible? In the meantime, if you need an EIN, you can do so without too much fuss. Go to the IRS website (www.irs.org) and either download an SS-4 form or apply online for it. If you are interested in more start-up information, we have lots of it! This article on launching your PTO might be a good start. Good luck and stay in touch!
