Hi LD,
Which piece of the thread were you referring to? The tax ID/501c(3) status info?

Thanks,
Rose

Yes, this helps! Thanks very much. Those big ticket items (like AG dolls, disney tickets) are what have me worried. Those are the items I was hoping to get. :(

I'm new to this site. May please get a list of the 120 Companies that donate? This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Can someone please clarify something for me and please excuse my ignorance... but what is the difference between the following:

Having a Tax ID Number
Being a 501 C 3 organization

Having a Tax ID number does not mean you have 501(c)(3) non-profit status from the IRS. All that number does is identify your organization with the IRS -- it's used to get a checking account, file taxes, etc.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tax_Identification_Number

You have to go through a lengthy application process and pay a $$$ fee to the IRS to have non-profit status.

And what is a letter of determination?

it's the letter that states you have non-profit status with the IRS.

Here's my problem: I have a Tax ID number for my school but the treasurer just told me that we might not be 'registered' as a 501 c 3. I've already been sending donation letters out!! ARRRGGG!!

You don't have to have 501(c)(3) status to ask for donations ... there are certain companies (American Girl comes to mind) that have that requirement, but many do not.

HTH!
:)
