Everyone on this site can relate to how you are feeling. It is hard work soliciting donations. I remember one year I actually went back and counted how many companies and business we contacted to try to calculate our return. I was surprised to see that we had contacted hundreds, with a 27% return. And that return was with follow-ups, and phone calls and hours and hours of time and energy from only a few of our dedicated committee members.
Please continue, but with a renewed energy knowing that others are cheering you on and wish you success!
And remember, many companies hold their donations and send them close to your event's date so you will receive most of your donations two weeks prior to your event.
One thing I like to do when soliciting for donations is figure out a win-win for both our school and the business owner. I try to involve them in some of our activities where they can make some money, and I really try to visit them periodically to support their business as well. Developing relationships is not easy, but will work to your advantage in the long run.
We are pounding the pavement and sending requests from this list but I have to say, so far we're not doing good in our first two months of trying to get donations.
Just wanted to share a great YES today. Got a PHONE CALL (I was shocked) from american girl doll. We requested the Girl of the Year Doll and was actually asked if we wanted the 2013 GOTY doll (or if we wanted another doll since we don't know the GOTY yet or GC to a store). I was floored that I was given the option. Our event is in April and I sent the letter about 3 weeks ago. Very excited.
