We don't get the addresses. We give the supplies (including postage) to the school and they will print the address labels and then put them on the cards and mail them for us. (Or allow those of us that work in the library anyhow to work in the office/library that day and put them on ourselves.) Either way, the information never leaves the school and is kept within the guidelines of privacy as established.
As to a breakfast of this sort. We have Kindergarten orientation the Friday before the first day of school. The parents ride the bus with their kids, walk the kids to their classrooms, the kids spend about 2 hours with their teachers playing games, setting up their desks, etc. and the parents go through a type of orientation, part of which include a PTO presentation, then the kids and parents all get back on their respective buses and ride home.
At the orientation we combine efforts with the school to provide a continental breakfast.
While a breakfast the first day of school, etc. sounds fun it wouldn't go over with our school simply because the first day of school is hectic enough without adding to the situation by adding an event into the mix and the teachers/faculty want to establish a routine as soon as possible to help the kids overcome the separation factor... that is why that Friday works so well. Gives the kids the experience and time to adjust and also helps to build the kid's confidence about going to school, etc.
