COME ON GUYS! I know there are more of you out there that have been through something like this!! This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
thats too much power for any one person to have with other people's money. get a by-law committee formed NOW and update those by-laws. make sure you address all issues such as election of officers, term limits and spending limits. our board has a limit and if an expense will go over that, such as the budget for a large fundraiser, it must be voted on at a general meeting.
This years President called me tonight to let me know we had bought a new big screen TV, VCR and DVD player with PTO money. **$1,500** (This was never voted on or even prices given!) She then informed me that she had a meeting with our principal and she told him she wanted to be president again. He found a copy of our bylaws (I didn't even know we had any!! I have been searching on here to make us some!!) and it says someone can be an officer in the same position for two consecutive years. They decided I could then be pres. the next year! She was extremely rude. I told her I wouldn't even consider being Vice Pres. again next year unless LOTS and LOTS and LOTS OF things changed!! We are meeting with the principal on Friday with the rest of the board to discuss other officers for next year. She already mentioned several names she would like. I'm sure we won't even vote on them. (We haven't on ANYTHING all year long!!) I kind of wonder if I should talk to the Principal. I am wondering if he just doesn't want me to be pres. or doesn't think I will be a yes man for him. (I WON'T)

Thanks guys!! I agree with both of you! Wheather or not I am president next year or not, I plan on trying tp set up a committee to construct some bylaws and part of that would nilude elections for next year!!! Our PTO has always seemed like a CLIQUE!!! I just don't want to rock the boat too much before he decides about President for next year. I have no idea who he would get or how they what kind of job they wold do without any rules or experience!! This email address is being protected from spambots. Get a group of parents together and demand an ELECTION. I'm uncomfortable with 2 people selecting the officers for the next year. That leaves you wide open for the impression (real or imagined) of a clique organization. It also may mean that the person getting the "job" may not necessarily be the best person for the job. Then if you get elected(or even if you don't), push for bylaws--be ready to offer to put them together yourself though ideally it should be done by a committee. A group without formal structure and bylaws is a group just looking for trouble. Every year all your programs and ways of doing things are subject to interpretation and the whims of whoever happens to be in charge that year. That constant confusion can really turn people off. Good luck!
Not sure what to tell you - you really need to get bylaws. Ask to see if there really are any bylaws and if they do have them (and just saying that they don't) - CHALLENGE THEM! That's how I got our bylaws updated when no one else would. Get some of the other members together and speak with the Principal as a group. That may make a difference. Good Luck and let us know what happens!
