Question: Recording PTO General Meetings

Is it legal to record general meetings with a recording device and then later go back and write the recorded minutes with only the needed information and not keep the recording? I've been told it is illegal and Robert's rules do not allow this. Also, the state I live in allows you to record conversations without the consent of other parties.

Hi,
Generally for public meetings, recording is not illegal. But legality is only one consideration. Check out this link -- it has great information about some other points to consider when it comes to minutes, namely the fact that the purpose of minutes is to record what happened, not what was said.

Hope this helps. Good luck. Liz from PTO Today
