My boys have never really been into guns. As long as they have soccer and football I think we will be alright. Although they love to go turkey hunting. And yes, my hubby does take the gun. But he's the overprotective one. Ok, they have the playstation and dvd player and tvs. in each room. I know, bad mother. But they spend more time outside and active than they do doing anything else. They are not allowed to watch certain programs and they know which ones. My boys will turn their heads at a harry potter commercial. Talk about funny!

If that were true, I'd have been blind by the time I was 10. I can't even tell you how many times my dad washed my mouth out with soap. Apparently, a smart mouth is a bad thing....

dlf - that is a tragic story. Guns really just completely scare me. I didn't grow up with them. And even though my dad was in the military, he never brought that kind of stuff to the house.

My son thinks I'm mean (I am) and that I don't trust him (I don't) and that airsoft guns are perfectly safe (they're not). Even though he doesn't have one, I don't mind bb guns because they're trainers for hunting rifles. But realistic pistols, sniper rifles, silencers, that's just crazy.

Our school lost a little boy this year in a hunting accident. No one but those trained in gun use and safety actually held guns but a misfire penetrated the wheel of the truck and killed him. Terribly , terribly sad....When my boys learn I will teach them on a firing range....jusr not worth the risk....d

I have to agree with you CC. I know how to use several different types of guns, but that knowledge and experience came from living in the country and raising animals that needed protection and from years of working with guns and other weaponry in my jobs. When the air pistols first came out, I took one out and tested it to see just how powerful it was. The pellet was the equivalent of a .22 in size. At 20' it went right through a 1/2" pad of paper. Not a toy for shooting in the backyard.


My son has a BB gun, but it can only be used at the grandparent's because they live in the country. He does target shooting and keeps the house sparrows out of the barn. Believe me, both kids got MAJOR safety training from both my dad and myself on gun usage. He was told in no uncertain terms that it could only be used for the above activities and in adult company. I took him by both shoulders, made him look me in the eye, and told him if I ever saw him using it in an unsafe or inappropriate manner it would disappear forever. He's been using it for a year now and has followed all the rules.

We had the "Arms Length" rule when our's was a toddler. No Power Rangers either. When people asked my son if he watched that show he said, "No, they make me a maniac." Remember in about 1996 when a little kid fell into the gorilla exhibit at the zoo? The news announcer said, "It's unclear how the child got over the five foot retaining wall..." Being parents of a three year old, my husband and I laughed hysterically. How? He probably jumped right over it or scaled in like a little spider monkey! In about 2 seconds!!!

My son is currently begging for an airsoft gun. But, uhn, aaalllllll of his friends have ooonnneeee..... I said Nope, Absolutely NOT. It's just a trainer for real guns. Have you seen those things? They're purposely manufactured to look like real guns.
