ScottsMom - I'm so sorry to hear about your son. I hope he's doing better. Just a suggestion - try talking to your schools counselor. I don't know what kind of relationship you have with yours - but ours is just incredible and I would go to her in a heartbeat with this type of issue. If nothing else, she/he could talk to your son and make sure he's ok (feeling safe, etc).

Ga-I have no idea why this child was on his own and no one seems to be able to give me an answer at this point. This happened at the end of the day and I'm not sure all the pieces had been put together when we left for the day. He could have been going to the bathroom or maybe on his way to the office as both are by the gym.
As for inclusion, at our school it is not working very well. Lots of parents are pulling their kids for problems similar to mine and the district is making it very hard for the school to move the children with extreme needs to a facility where they can be better served, helped and supervised. My biggest problem is that most of the students that were moved into our school had small classrooms and nothing was assumed about their abilities and at our school they do not have the attention or support they need and they are expected to behave and be able to follow the same rules as the other children, but suspending a child like this from school for a fit he is not able to control is not going to make inclusion successful. My biggest issue is that I feel I shouldn't expect something my school can't give but that doesn't keep me from feeling like the scales aren't balanced for equal education opportunites or that my child is getting the short end of the stick.

The irony of commitment is that it’s deeply liberating-in work, in play, in love. The act frees you from the tyranny of your internal critic, from the fear that likes to dress itself up and parade around as rational hesitation. To commit is to remove your head as the barrier to your life. --Anne Morris

oh scott, I am so sorry for your son having to go thru that today. bless his heart. The sad thing is that more and more schools are heading towards inclusion. it can work in most cases, but in those few that don't work, it can be really bad on everyone. Why was this child wondering around unsupervised?

We did a Christmas around the world thing also this year in both 1 and 3 grades. the teachers had activities set up in their classrooms and the children would go to a classroom each day and learn about that country. it was really cool. My first grader walked around saying merry Christmas in French for 2 days. He is missing his front teeth, so he says it really funny like.

Ok--here's some divinity--homemade to get you in the Christmas mood. tomorrow it is stained glass candy making day and me and the boys are making gingerbread houses.

You guys are in such a good mood. I sure hope it's contagious because I need some. I was having a great day, still on my high from last night, and I get a call from the school. No matter what it is, they never call me when it's good. My middle child (7) has been hit in the head with a chair. If I may backtrack, our district started inclusion this year and we are having lots of trouble, this is the 4th incident where my child has had a minor injury due to a child that has no ability to control themself being in his proximity. My child was in gym and another child somehow wandered in unnoticed and threw a chair which happened to land on my son's head. I'm driving, don't usually talk on the phone, but it was the school, so I'm trying not to cry or yell (I muct be bipolar b/c I always try to do both at the same time) and I can't help but be upset. My son is fine but it bothered him. He is the one that doesn't shut up and he was unusually quiet all night, even when we went out to eat at his favorite place. I'm trying to be rational about this but am having lots of trouble not marching down to the nearest private school tomorrow and mortgaging the house to get him enrolled.
On another note, the restaurant we went to tonight was having a fundraiser for a child with cancer. My husband works with the child's aunt so we decided to go. You would not believe all the people that know this child or know her family that showed up to support her. I ran into family, friends, and even teachers from my kid's school. It was really touching and should have helped that Christmas mood of mine. I also sent goodies to the local Goodyear strikers working the picket line. I'm trying really hard. Tomorrow is the religious ed Christmas program. My class is singing The First Noel. It's funny, I don't think any of them knew more than the first line to the song if that. I remember when every school did a winter program with some Christmas music. One year, we did Christmas around the world and sang songs in different languages and the 6th graders had little speaking parts talking about how each country celebrates the holiday. Those were the days.....

GaMom - That's the spirit! Lovely rendition. Now to puzzle through those carols...
