Our school's Area Education Agencies liason heard about the event and offered her help. She has a Powerpoint presentation on helping from home and said she would be happy to do her seminar in conjuction with the teachers. I have to call her tomorrow after my partner and I meet today and finalize our plans. Our only problem seems to be getting teachers. I have two kindergarten and one 4th grade who are definitely in, but no one else has come forward to answer the plea(note) I sent out almost two weeks ago. I guess my partner and I will have to go to individuals and personally ask. I'm getting really excited about this, the parents that have heard about it are very enthusiastic and most of the teachers think it's a great idea. The principal loves it too, so that really helps. It's turned out to be a little more work than I expected(like pulling teeth in some cases), but I think everyone will appreciate the help it provides. I'll let you know if my partner and I come up with anything new today.
We decided to mix two grades at a time and have the teachers, yes we are getting a few!!!!! We are aiming for national education week in November and look to have two nights since we are a k-3 school. I think we are going to set up subject tables with info and have the teachers speak briefly about their grade and that's all I have so far anything new with your group I'd love any ideas at all!! very not sure what I am doing> Thanks so much [img]smile.gif[/img]
WE have decided to set up our event to occur the week following parent/teacher conferences. It will be held over two nights with one night for K-2nd and one for 3rd-5th. The K-2 night will just be two 30 minute seminars. The lower grade teachers feel that they don't have enough to cover to warrant individual grade level seminars. Instead a teacher from each grade level (k-2) will get up and speak for a few minutes about curriculum and learning tips and then they will take questions at the end. The 3rd-5th night we will have 20 minute seminars at each grade level. It will make for a longer night, but well worth it!! We're doing supper too and I got my hot dogs donated already!!!
I just met with the principal yesterday and told her this is what the parents want if she wants them involved we should try to work it out somehow with the teachers. she is going to try at the next staff meeting next week to get as many on board as possible! I also plan to plant a few seeds with the teachers I know. So we will see! I like the idea of mixing the grades together. Will keep you up to date let me know if you get anything new!!
Our teachers aren't really big on coming to meetings and some wouldn't dream of doing anything that is outside their contract, but for the most part we have teachers who really appreciate what the PTO does for the school and how much we support them so even though they may not have a lot of time to give, they support our fundraisers. I already have some teachers on board to run seminars at their grade level, but I haven't gotten one for every slot. To make matters more difficult, my co-, who is a teacher said she would present this event at the staff meeting, but she didn't tell me she didn't get to EVERY teacher, so when I started talking it up at the PTO meeting I had some teachers who were a little upset because they new nothing about it!! I am spending this week trying to contact teachers individually and tell them what we want to do. It's a win-win situation for teachers and parents-parents learn how to help with homework, teachers get to tell them how to use the same techniques that are being used in the classroom and get to do it in a group instead of repeating themselves over and over to individuals. Most of all it will help the kids!! I'd be happy and appreciate communicating back and forth as we both put our programs together. Maybe we can figure this out between us!!
