ever have curriculum night???

21 years 2 months ago #117569 by LUVMYKIDS
We(the membership VPs) are currently working on a Homework Help Night. We plan on having two nights-one for K-2nd and one for 3rd-5th. There will be a seminar for each grade level given by a teacher at that grade level. The parents will be able to learn the terminology and techniques used to teacher the curriculum. Some of the terms used in math and English have changed over the years and many parents are unfamiliar with the new terms so it becomes difficult to help your child with homework. Our parents selected this as a family night they wanted on our survey last school year. We plan on serving a hotdog supper in the cafeteria and have babysitting in the gym. We think our plans our going pretty well, but it would be great to hear from someone who has already done this kind of a program??!!

Hey Rocky, watch me pull a rabbit out of my hat.

We have a curriculum night for each section. Our school is multi-age so we have K/1, 2/4, and 4/5 on three consecutive nights. Our principal speaks for the first half hour, then we go to the classroom to hear what they will be doing during the year. Our teachers talked about state standards--they change daily around here, guided reading groups, etc.

The only involvement our PTO has in this is finding a babysitter...this is a parent only event. We charge 50 cents per child and the PTO pays the babysitter $10 and gets to keep the 50 cents per child.

Hope this helps.

Our school runs curriculum nights at the beginning of the school year. Parents spend a half hour in their child's classroom, where their teacher explains what goes on during the day. The teacher also explains the basic curriculum, and what the state standards are for that grade level. Then parents go to the cafeteria where the principals introduce the rest of the staff (gym, art, music teachers, reading specialists, etc).

We get almost 100% participation. In my son's class last night, I think there was only one parent missing. We sit at our child's desk, so we can see their writing folders and books and things.

This is all run by the principals- our parent group is not involved in planning or running this event.

WE do a meet the teacher night. 1st and 2nd grade on a Monday and 3rd and 4th on WEd. This is how this years format is 1st grade parents go right to shilds classroom and hear a talk by that teacher and maybe ask a few questions. Kids do a little packet that you look thru. 2nd grade parents go right to the cafe and hear a breif speech by the principal from there they are guided to all the extras (gym, music, art, science, libary)Then everyone switches 1st grade parents go to caf to begin their tour and 2nd grade parents go to the classroom. We usally have almost full classrooms full of parents. We also offer babysiting by the high school peer leaders in the preschool room. it runs from 6:30 to 7:45 at 7:45 from 8:15 we have coffee and cookies in the cafe (nice chance to mingle and meet some parents)
