do you ignore them? carry on with your mission? do you retaliate and justify all that you do or is not really necessary?

One thing you need to always remember is that you do not need to justify anything, as long as you know that you are doing the right things for the right reasons. We do the best we can with the resources that we have at the time.
Personally, I always offer to meet with critics. Noone ever agrees, even when I shower (joke lol).
Criticism of the PTO nature is usually based on a single observation with no context, and it is not usually something people are thinking too hard about.
Members are always entitled to give their opinion, positive or negative, and we should be willing to hear it. However, if someone does not like something my group is doing, they'd better have some possible solutions ready and their criticism better be ready for scrutiny.
To me, hearing out critics is one way to improve our group. Just the process of discussing things improves the group. In my experience, most 'critics' of PTO are more gossips than anything else.
All this being said, if you feel this badly in August, I don't see how you can last the year without some sort of resolution.
The first month, to me, is the one full of hope -- all the new names and faces with high expectations. No one has let us down yet, there have been no breakdowns or mistakes, and there is a possibility we can get through the year without ever going into crisis mode.
Good luck!
