HELP - PTO VP Needs To GO

"She is a "me" person and takes everything personally and turns EVERY situation into an issue."

Rather than find fault and make judgements and inferences (and are they based on fact or hearsay/gossip, but that is almost beside the point), why not focus on finding a solution.

It sounds to me like you need to have the princaipal, a more neutral party, assess this situation and find resolution. If box tops have indeed been taken and not acconted for or monies turned in, that is a concrete thing the principal can bite his teeth into and if your bylaws support removal, go thru the steps to do so.

Well, now I've seen everything.... RobinD, I couldn't hardly believe that anyone would buy or sell boxtops on ebay so I just had to check for myself. There they were! Incredible. 100 boxtops for $16.99 plus $2 shipping. Who would pay nearly $20 for $10 worth of boxtops? I can only hope that the seller came by those boxtops honestly.

I am way too naive for my own good. I never would have believed it if I hadn't just seen it with my own eyes.

To echo LUV's quote from page 2, "What is the world coming to?"

I agree with previous comments. Now that its election time, its a great opportunity to vote her out! If the term is 2 years and she will automatically be a part of the board next year, then you have to read through your bylaws for another means. If you do not have a code of conduct, do you have anything that states that a person must be in "good standing". If so, you can losely use. Although we also allow our Box Top coordinator to take them home to count them, she clearly stated that she didn't think it was enough to send it and she didn't submit them. That could be seen as stealing or preventing the PTO from making money. Your PTO did not make money when it clearly should have from the Box Tops. You also stated that since she did not show up for the Book Fair, it closed early. Again, preventing income for the PTO. I would think the President, Treasurer and Principal could sit down with her and list these actions, their negative effect on the PTO and its income and ask her to step down. It will be very uncomfortable and it seems she will turn it into something personal, but you can't. You must stick to hard facts and state that she is not a positive member of the board and her actions are hindering progress and success of the PTO. See where that goes.

Ok.. a couple of things.. you noted that " we are about to hold elections".. has she turned in a nomination for the position? If she's truly that bad, and you want someone new, then perhaps it's time to find someone to " run " against her.

What was her motivation in wanting to be on the board in the first place? How does she get along at board meetings? or your general meetings?

Are there clear cut guidelines for the job descriptions ? ( I know.. most of us take for granted what we know we are supposed to do... but others are more literal and need concrete direction)

Is she trustworthy? What is her personal life like? Have there been other problems besides the labels and BoxTops? I hate to say this and fuel your fire, but if the Box Tops and Labels are gone, it's possible that they could have been sold on ebay. I always see tons of Box Tops and Labels on ebay.. and they usually sell for " face value".. schools want to hit goals, or parents want to help donate more, or help win contests..... people buy them all the time....

and .. a note on the expiration dates.. I have heard ( although have not confirmed this via General Mills) through these boards that they never really " expire" and you can always turn them in. The only reason they put an expiration date is so if they stop the program, schools can't send them in " forever". We have never checked expiration dates.

good luck!

Abby - Aye yi yi.... Sounds like you have a tough situation there. I wonder why this person tried so hard to become VP, only to lay down and do nothing.

I agree with the others who suggest that you review your bylaws and add some info about officer expectations, grounds for removal from office, etc.

Regarding the boxtops. My Boxtops Chairmen always took the boxtops home. It's a great sitting-in-front-of-the-tv project. And, if you're lucky, you can get hubby and kids to help too. The thing is, you really have to trust the person taking them home to cut, count and send in the boxtops so your school gets the intended benefit. Parents would probably be shocked to know that their efforts are for nothing. I, for one, would mail mine to a friend/family member's school before I would send them in to a group that might just throw them away.

For now, take comfort in knowing that the school year is nearly over. If she's doing a lousy job as VP and nobody wants her to return, she won't win the election. If the officers appoint the committee chairs, then appoint someone else for next year.

On a side note, I once worked with a fellow officer who could not take any kind of confrontation, advice, constructive criticism, anything. She saw every conversation as a personal attack and responded personally. Draw the line and demand professional behavior from her. Explain that you will respect her as a fellow officer and speak to her with a professional tone but will end the conversation the moment it turns personal.

I took what she was saying as she is the present VP on the board. if thats the case and she isnt going to meetings, or helping at all or doing anything I know in our bylaws it is grounds for removal.
As for the Box Tops she did take them home but she never sent them in which was really not her decision to make.

Maybe I am not getting what she said.

You definitely need job descriptions and responsibilities. Good Luck
