at our school we have backpacks for kids where we send food home with underpriviledged children for the weekends, and we also pack enough for siblings in the home. Second Harvest Food Bank provides everything.
We do this also it called our Sunshine committee. They take bags when they have their tonsils out or death in the immediate family, or accident, things like that.
It really is nice to see their face when they get their little goodie bag. We have books, games, girl/boy things etc.

At our school (and the Elem. we used to be at) we have a program that the PTO funds called Helping Hands. We use the funds throughout the year for families in need (2 families from Hurricane Katrina relocated to us last year)or in tough times (Christmas dinners, clothes, supplies)or an illness or accident like Dianna described. Usually the recipients are kept anonymous for their privacy unless it's a known student or staff illness/accident. It has grown bigger every year and really makes us all feel great we can provide it.
