Another Idea for Involvement

18 years 5 months ago #115484 by dlf
Hi guys--I wanted to share something that we just started that has truly touched my heart. It is also inexpensive and a great way to build community (I now your rolling your eyes -- oh g-d...she has ANOTHER good idea) but bear with me. Our school recently had a little girl in a car accident that had to have her jaw wired shut. We came upon the idea of creating "Bobcat Bags" and delivering them to our school's children who have been involved in serious accidents or have experienced hospital stays (you can define your own criteria of course). We spend about 25 dollars on the "bag and goodies" and usually buy an inexpensive backpack or girlie bag and fill it with new crayons (who doesn't like that), Uno cards, dice, a grade appropriate work book etc. Then one of the board members deliver it to the family at an appropriate time. You can personalize it...for the little girl we put in a couple of barbie straw cups since her jaw was wired....and I'm telling you those little faces just LIGHT up. Luckily we've only had to deliver two but the last little boy was in a biking accident and broke his femur which required surgery, pins and rods. Poor little guy was on codiene for pain and everything else. My intent was to just drop the bag at their doorstep with a note and then leave but the mom drove up behind me and took me to the little guy who was laying on a lounge on the back of the porch. When I walked onto the porch and little man saw what I had he immediately sat up and smiled. After a quick conversation his mom walked me out and I said "that was so neat" and she said "It sure was...that's the first time he's sat up since he's been home."

And people ask me why I do this....
