I first contacted our City's community relations and they also contacted the Chamber. The lady from the City was so great. She gave us more than I imagined. Also, be sure to contact the Police Dept. and Fire Dept. for safety items/coloring books/literature.
I did go and purchase some plain red (our school colors) folders at WalMart a couple days ago. They had them for 8 cents each. Very good price when you're buying a bunch.
We also have the school calendar magnets to place in these. I'm hoping all of this will let the parents know that we do care about them and want them to be informed and make them feel more welcome at the school and getting involved in their child's education/school.
Good luck to you,

A note about Holly's donation from the city. Two years ago we did welcome packets for new families moving into our city, I actually just called our chamber looking for any info they may be willing to give. The lady actually ended up doing good size packets about our city, sites, history, coupons and maps. we then added info about our school, important phone numbers, organizations, etc. If your town has a chamber go there and ask I think that you would be surprised at what they may offer you free of charge>
