We have general meetings every month, September through May. I've got to check on board meetings--I'm new at this. I think they are held 4 times a year or as needed. I sort of question the need for monthly meetings as we usually just sort of "re-hash" things that are going on..

Our board meets together with the principal one week before each monthly general meeting. This gives us a chance to put together the agenda, go over any last minute details, etc. It ensures that we are all on the same page. It also ensures that the board is 'together' on issues before presenting them to the general membership.
We have a general meeting in August to approve the budget and one in May to elect officers.
Board (business) meetings are heald monthly.
We have a large Exec Board of 25-35 people that includes officers, a rep from each grade, all committee chairs, Principal, Vice Principal, and 2 teacher reps. Anyone can attend the board meeting (to listen - they need to notify us to be on the agenda). The board is deliberately large so as to be representative, since it conducts all the business. Leaving the day to day decision-making to the board works well for us, but I would not favor this approach if it were just 4 or 5 people.
We have a monthly meeting September thru June. (Usually, in December we ditch it because we just finish up on a big school wide Winter Wonderland event and we are all pretty pooped and need to get our own houses in order for the holidays). We have an Executive Board meeting to get our heads together and on the same page in either late July or early August, depending on everyone's availability with vacations. Then we usually have another Executive pow wow in February to regroup and refocus. Thats about it.
We have board and general meetings each month Sept-May. The new board may meet a couple of times over the summer to work on budget, registration and open house plans.
