President is the Queen

20 years 3 months ago #99780 by LUVMYKIDS
As a working mom who has chaired many events, and served on the PTO board for several years(2 as Prez), I must say that working outside the home DOES NOT mean you can't coordinate events. I get some of my best work done on my morning and lunch breaks(no kids to distract me). I am also fortunate enough to work for a company that holds family and volunteerism in high esteem. They are very flexible and have even paid me while I have done some of the projects at the school. I also have a friend who is fond of saying "If you want something done, give it to a busy person." Busy people tend to be very organized and can handle the stresses of planning and pulling off some pretty big projects! Heck, give the lady this letter if you want!

Good luck and don't let her rain on your parade with her small mindedness!

Hey Rocky, watch me pull a rabbit out of my hat.

Like Michelle B said, it ia all about the bylaws. You must know what they say and what your rights are here.

I know that confrontations can be hard, but sometimes you have to do it and it is all in your presentation. You catch more flies with honey.
Maybe it is just a matter of letting her know that you wish to be more involved, thus why you took the position.

And how are your committee chairs normally decided on? If there is something you really want to chair I say let her know it. We have working moms that chair certain events. Not all events are created equal and some are very easy for working moms to do.

Good Luck!

Wow, first off, being a red head is not a bad thing!!
Secondly, you say you and the secretary voted this person in yet you seem to have a pretty good guage on who she is. Why did you vote her in if you knew she was so miserable?
As for what you can do. What do your bylaws say about calling a meeting? Is there a specific time frame to do it in (three days notice etc)? Is she supposed to be the deciding voice on who chairs a committee or is there supposed to be a vote? Your bylaws are your first line of defense. It really bugs me when idiots get into a position of power, they usually cause more damage than you can imagine before you can get them out... But enough about Bush... ))JOKE(( :D
After you check your bylaws, be upfront with your President. Tell her that you are very able and capable of running a committee and (if the bylaws support it) it is part of your job as VP to do so. I would also express to her with your secretary, that you would like to be a part of your executive board decisions (like planning the year) especially since it's your job to do so...

Help, I am new to the PTO was voted in as Vice-President actually the 2nd VP. Our President moved so the other VP was voted into her slot (by myself, secretary, & treasurer). This woman we'll call "Alice" and the treasurer are buddies. Myself and the secretary are left in the dark. These two had a meeting w/the Principal and laid out the entire years activities with zero word to us. I just received an email and they have planned a meeting at a local restaurant, 1 day notice. Is there ANYTHING I can do? I am a red-head and do not do well confronting people. Any advice is appreciated. OHHHH I'm a working mom and she has made it very clear that I will not run any committees as I will not have time.......she dislikes any class lower then herself and speaks horrible about them.
