Curious about officer elections

We are a little different we post all the positions and anyone can nominate themselves or someone else by submitting the nomination to the secretary before the meeting at which we accept the nominations. The person being nominated must be present at the meeting and accept the nomination in order to run. We haven't had a slate with more than one person running for any position is years! Not a competitive group. Everyone is happy with this system so far we feel it gives everyone a chance.

As we approach election season, I'm curious about a few things.
1) How many usually have enough people to have more than one person running for any one office?
2) How do people recruit their candidates? Do you have nominating committees that make a pretty good effort to recruit people throughout the school population, or do you pretty much look to your committee chairs to step up, or something in between?

I'll start--I've got kids in two elementary schools. In one, the nominating committee is made up of current Board members--who may or may not be elected, not sure--and the officers have, for years, been generated from the existing officers or other members of the Board.

In the other, the nominating committee (NC) is made up of a variety of people on and off the Board, but who usually come to parent group meetings. (Pretty much if you happened to be there that night we did the elections, and you were willing to do it, you were elected.) The majority of the officer positions need to be filled for next year, so the NC is recruiting throughout the school poplulation with flyers and phone calls to known volunteers. There's a possibility the NC ends up with more than one candidate for several positions, but will most likely somehow recommend a slate with one candidate/position.
