I used geocities through Yahoo. Our technology teacher helped me get started, but it will pretty much walk you through the steps. You create your own ID and password. Mine was very simple because I am not that computer oriented.
Mark's Mom gives some good advice. Finding a volunteer with those skills is an excellent solution. However, do be aware there are some policy issues you need to think through. Here are a couple:
1) Publishing personal information - in an email to select few or a newsletter to your parents, it's common to publish who to call or who to email for a certain project. However, with a website, you've just offered this information to the world. Think twice about publishing phone numbers, and consider setting up generic email addresses (perhaps for the PTO).
2) What is your school's policy about publishing children's names with a photo - or even in a newsletter on the web? This can be a very dicy area.
Don't be discouraged - it's all still quite doable. But you do have to give some extra thought when you "go global", which is exactly what a website does.
We did two things for this. 1. added web design as a talent/skill we were seeking in our parent survey. Sure enough--unknown to us we had a husband/wife team that did web design for a living and had their own small business. They are creating one for us. 2. check out myschoolonline.com I just figured out how to im people but was able to create a site using their templates and 30 day free trial. Good Luck!
