Our school newsletter includes "PTO Corner" where we can get information out. I like the bulletin board idea and will talk to our principal about that. This forum is a great source of ideas!
Our school puts out a newsletter each month and the PTO President(me) includes a letter. I make it pretty informal, just like a letter you would write to a friend. I give brief updates on any programs or plans, use it as a way to ask for help with projects, and give special thanks to anyone whose done anything extra. We also have a bulletin board in the lobby where we post the budget, minutes from last month's meeting, agenda for next month's meeting and any other info. we think parents should know about. Not communicating with your parents can get you a reputation as a clique and can really break down your ability to get volunteers or participation in the programs you sponsor. Good luck in your new position!
Hi Bear - One of our secretary's duties is to put out our PTO newsletter once a month. We always include everything discussed and/or decided on at the previous PTO meeting. The principal will usually have an article that we include, we remind parents to save General Mills Box Tops and any other fundraising effort we are doing that month, we always list the next meeting date and time and all current officers names and phone numbers. I believe our members and parents do read the newsletter for the most part. And like you said, it reaches the parents who work and cannot attend the meetings. I think you'll get great response if you put one together.
I am taking over as PTO President next year, 2002 - 2003. On of our schools major complaints about the old board was that they never shared anything with the parents. They did everything on their own and we never knew about it until it was happening. I would like to start a PTO newletter next year to inform the parents of whats going on in our school. A lot of parents work and are unable to attend the meetings, so I thought a newsletter would be a good idea. I would appreciate any suggestions from anyone who does a school letter. I need topic and layout ideas. Better yet, if you could send me a copy of your school's letter it would be great. Thanks.
