Since you're wanting to resign so early in the school year, it's seems safe to presume that you had the two jobs when you volunteered or were elected president just a short time ago. I'm puzzled as to why you agreed to take on the position considering the pre-existing demands you already had on your time?
The proper procedure for resigning is to submit your resignation to the board. When you do so, you've created a motion that needs to be resolved with a vote. Assuming the board passes the motion and releases you from the position, the current VP is obligated to step up as President for the remainder of the term. If the VP is unwilling to do so, the board moves to fill the position according to the steps outlined in the PTO by-laws.
At this time I think I still need to step down mid term.. I will be around to help & answer questions, but I think that my personal life is suffering more than the PTO would suffer. I am working full time at one job and part time at another along with being President of the PTO... I need to let go of something and it can't be a job at this point.
I am finding that things I am to take care of are slipping through the cracks and I am not doing 100% for my school.
This is the first year that I have delegated; & the PTO has parents that are chair people of just about every aspect of our group, and I am doing more this year than last year. My term ends this spring. I don't want to stick with it and be resentful toward the end. I would prefer to leave my position on a good note and right now the PTO Board & Committee people are amazing & have great energy. They have kept me going, but I am stretched way too thin.
I had not seen a thread on this subject, so thought I'd ask to find out if others stepped down mid-term & to see what they did or if there were rules...
I've been involved in the PTO in some aspect for 7 years. I'd love my last 2 years in elementary school PTO to be fun for me and my family; which is also burned out. When I have a meeting or have to be at the school for something I get the "PTO again?" with a whine... Plus I don't want the current Board brought down by any of my burnout. Does that even make sense?
Sorry to hear you are feeling burned out -- never a good feeling. Think that with anything you do for an extended period of time you experience periods of burn out. Also think that Jewel has good point about sticking with it until the end of the year if you can.
Can you step back and evaluate what parts you find the most rewarding and what parts you don't, then see if you can delegate more in the areas that you don't find fun? Here's a bunch of articles that I think you will like:
The best time to step down is at the end of your term. To resign your position mid-term for no other reason than it's not "fun" enough for you creates a burden on the rest of the board, leaves the organization in a precarious position, and undermines school parents confidence in the PTO. This is not the legacy you want associated with your name.
Carefully consider what aspects of your position are the most stressful and what possible alternatives (other than quitting) you could implement to relieve that stress and create a strong organization overall.
Not sure if this is the correct thread to post this in, but here is my dilemma...
PTO use to be fun for me. I loved everything about it. I am currently the President of our PTO, but I am not having fun. It has become a burden to me. Is this normal for the position?
When is a "good time" to step down? How do I step down? Are there rules?
