I would add that you may want to mention that during the next month that the Treasurer's role will be handled by (however you plan to handle it) and that at the next meeting you will be looking to hold an election to fill that position.
If you had an Assistant Treasurer then he/she should take on that role for the next month. If this is the case I would make an extra point to explain that the Asst. was not involved in the issue. If the Asst. is willing to take on the primary role, then that should be hendled at the next meeting election, as well as a replacement for the Asst.
Thank goodness I've never been part of a group that has had to face something like this, but I hope I can throw out my thoughts and help a little.
I would beat this member to the punch when the next meeting rolls around: Open your meeting with a brief statement from the board that you want to let all members know that the unfortunate situation with the Treasurer has been handled, then give a brief description of how you handled it and what plans have been put in place for return of the funds. Next I would assure the membership that the remaining board members were not involved in the theft and that you all have the financial security of the organization as a top priority. I would hope that you have reviewed your financial practices and closed any gaps that would allow something like this to happen again. If so, state that to the members in detail. Maybe even hand out copies of your fund handling requirements. Also tell the members that if they have any thoughts on the handling of funds, to please bring those ideas to the board.
If you're open and forthcoming about what happened, how it was resolved and what has been done to insure it won't happen again, this may alleviate the anger and fears that some of your members may have and eliminate the request for the board to resign.
Help!
Recently our Treasurer helped herself to some of the PTO funds. We have rectified the situation, she is paying us back and she is no longer on the Board.
We notified our community and now we are hearing that some PTO members feel that each Board member should resign. If this is presented at our next meeting, how do we proceed? We do not have anything in our bylaws about a member asking for the resignation of a board member.
I am hoping some have guidance for me...I want to be prepared. No other Board members were involved in the problem and we all want to continue with our commitment to the school.
