Chairman Accountability

We had a similar occurrence last year. No fun.

After our verbal requests were ignored, we made a request in writing with a set deadline by which the officer needed to provide the requested information. When she didn't comply, we convened a board meeting and notified her of the meeting. The members then reviewed the bylaws and we moved toward removal. She was informed of this in writing(she never came to the meeting). We then held another board meeting which the officer attended and we went line by line through a list of the offenses she had committed in violation of the bylaws and informed her of the potential consequences. She finally conformed(kind of). You hate to go to these drastic measures with a volunteer, but they can really screw things up for you, especially if it's in an area concerning finances.

How would you handle a committee chairman who ignores repeated requests for updates from the executive board?

Let's say frequent updates from the chairman are necessary for decision making and directly impacts the work of other officers and committees. Yet despite many, many requests for information, the chairman steadfastly refuses to provide it and even goes so far as to accuse the officers of badgering and harrassment. And she's also just stopped coming to meetings so even the basic monthly reports are now nonexistent.

Complicate the matter even more by knowing that the Staff Advisor/Liason to the PTO is best friends with said chairman and is refusing to get involved - despite the officers' requests that she assist them in working through this matter.

The group has never had to exercise the Removal of Board Member clause in their bylaws but that may be the only option left. It's an extreme measure but the officers really do feel like every attempt at reconciliation has been made.

If this were your team, how would you advise them?
