Who can be a treasurer?

Check those bylaws! Our Treasurer is elected each year just like all the other board members. Typically the people who run for the office have some bookkeeping experience.

Keeping your money safe from theft is best done by having clear and strict financial controls in place. You can find that info on this site!

None of the groups I've been involved with used staff members for treasurer. It's always been a member of the group.

unregistered is right to suggest you consult your bylaws. They should outline the requirements for each officer position.

Perhaps the principal is incorrectly assuming that a paid staff member is safer or maybe just more under his control. Both ideas are wrong. Employess are just as capable of embezzlement as volunteers. And financial control belongs to the voting members, not the principal.

If your group has always had a staff member for treasurer and now want to have a volunteer, you may need to get bonding insurance. Maybe this is what the principal is thinking? That staff are already covered on the school's policy but volunteers are not?

Perhaps your bylaws stipulate that an employee has to be treasurer. I've served as an officer in 3 PTOs and most of us feel more comfortable having a staff member as treasurer. It does make things easier, most of the time. He/she has the records at school for easy access when needed.

When I first started using this boards there was articles everyday in the "news" section about parent group thefts. It made me extremely cautious.
