Thank you so much for the superb advice. LOVE this site! We need an audit just to make sure everything Is going as it should be. And after 3-5 years, I think it's about time. So, now I don't feel so bad about talking to someone about having it done! you guys are so awesome. Seriously, you all should write a book! lol.
We audit at the end of every school year whether the treasurer changes or not(they can stay for two years). It's just good business practice and our bylaws include the policy. If you think there are inappropriate activities going on then you most definitely should request an audit. We just did an extra one, because our treasurer was getting behind on things and we didn't want anyone to think anything inappropriate was happening. She was just a little overwhelmed and everything was fine in the audit, but we felt we needed to do it so no one could question her integrity or ours.
We don't hire a firm, we ask a parent or friend of a parent who works in accounting if they would do it. We usually give them a small gift like a certificate to a nice restaurant or something. You could even have a committee of two or three people do it together. They could each audit a specific area or work together.
Yes, you can request an audit. We all should have one done at least once a yr. or every time you change treasurers. Look at your by-laws, it should state who can do it. Mine state that the exec. board can or an auditor. I would prefer an outside firm so the books are being done correctly & accurately. Good luck!!!!
I do not believe we have had an audit in the last 3-5 years. Can we request one? There is reason to believe we need one. And who does this? Any help is greatly appreciated ! Thank you!
