Hey, lets vote for our next U.S. president by e-mail! How many times can I vote?
It looks like many people may not have had a chance to see the e-mail before voting was over. What happened to an open forum? When our P.T.O. spends that much outside the regular budget a special meeting is required in an attempt to fully educate.
e-mail voting no.
Our Charter only allows the Exec Bd to vote via e-mail, and it also requires the Recording Sec. to keep a hard copy of the votes cast and to include the results of the vote at the next PTO meeting. This puts the vote "on record" and allows the membership to discuss or even overturn an incorrect decision by the board.
E-mail voting by the membership is not a good idea. I understand that people will have situations that happen (also called "life") but if you can't come to the meeting you shouldn't be able to vote.
I can understand the temptation the Pres. may have had if it was perceived to be an "emergency" situation, but the situation was handled poorly and should never be repeated.
I also saw something in the California Corporations Codes regarding teleconferencing. It is an alternative, as long as everyone can be "heard." Email voting is not the same as teleconferencing. I think the meeting is still supposed to be "live." (Again, net meeting like Shawn says!)
If I were you, I'd bring this up at your next meeting and see if you can ban email voting. Nip it in the bud--email voting is not a good practice.
Would have to be in bylaws, I know some old bylaw examples use teleconferencing (net meeting instead) email just wouldnt be okay with me unless there was some way to verify who, what, where, when.
