:confused: I am so confused. In the last 4 years, I am the 3rd treasurer...a volunteer parent who knows how to balance a checkbook (all the requirements they said that I needed)...not true. Not 1 person kept records the same and I was given storage boxes, bags, notebooks, simply put a "mess" of stuff from the past several years. We discovered our EIN number was inactive, so in the process of getting this fixed, I found out we were not recognized as a "tax exempt organization". After 2 calls to the IRS, I was told to fill out a 1023, which the president took from me and just returned to me after having this for 2 months and said to add 4 years of financial reports, which the IRS said...had to be "easy to read". I am in some major need of help, advise, whatever anyone can give me. I have been going through the boxes and this is enough for me to throw the towel in. The previous treasure told us (all new board members this year by the way) that all we needed to fill out was this form once a year in May but this is just for the state..I spoke with her and she knows nothing about filing with the federal and said she was never told to do this. I am so afraid that we are going to be hit big time with a fine. We have already agreed the $500 fee needs to be paid...but could somebody please send me an example of what they sent to the IRS to show financial records...my email is This email address is being protected from spambots. I am sorry this is so long and any help would be greatly appreciated. Also, the IRS said that this could take 6 to 9 months to process...are we allowed to operate as a tax-exempt organization till then?
