Now I have the "big" RRO book and I think that you can nominate yourself but if there is somethingin yor by-laws that takes presedent over RRO.

I've looked thru the two summary books I have on Robert's Rules of Order and I didnt' find any restriction on a person nominating herself. I'm not a trained parlimentarian, but I wouldn't have a problem with someone nominating themselves. It's basically the same as someone signing up to run a large event or chair a major committee.

It does seem a little odd that she would want to take on a leadership position of an organization she's unfamiliar with, but she obviously has some motivation. We have two officers this year who had never previously been to a PTO meeting. It's a little hard because they can't rely on their past knowledge, but they have a fresh perspective that's very welcome.

We had a woman once, who returned her committee chairperson volunteer sheet with every committee checked - that she would chair every thing we did. When we called to confirm (and see how fast we needed to send the paddy wagon over to fetch this lady) we learned that her daughter had completed the form - not Mom. Apparently the daughter felt that Mom needed to be more involved at school, so she completed the form, signing Mom up for everything, just to get Mom there. How sad is that.

This woman could have the same problem - it could be her kid nominating her for every office. Or she could feel like an outside on the "in" group. But, if she hasn't bothered to go to any meetings, it does make you wonder.

I'm not opposed to people nominating themselves. But I do think people should make an effort to attend some meetings before signing up to be in charge. Some one needs to call her and find out exactly what her intentions are.

Our bylaws do not specifically say you cannot nominate yourself, however, it does stipulate who can be nominated. You must be a dues paying member, a member in good standing and have volunteered and contributed to the organization in the past,

This saves the organization from having any one just showin up and deciding to to hijack the group. A good clause to have in your bylaws.
