Nominating Yourself?

In our process someone can nominate another person or themselves. I don't see the point in forcing someone else to nominate them. What does that gain?

However, our bylaws do say a person can only run for one office. Even if you don'thave that stipulation, I'd suggest the nominating committee work with her to decide which ONE job she would like to run for.

I dont know> I would think if its not specified in your By Laws that it should be aceceptable to nominate yourself. If you're new as this woman is then no one would nominate you because they dont know you. Our By Laws state that anyone can nominate someone and we also take nominations from the floor. Maybe this is her way of getting her foot in the door and try to be a part of it all. I dont think I'd be so bold as to nominate myself for everything though. LOL

I think our bylaws state that someone must attend a certain number of meetings before they can run for a position unless they are otherwise appointed. Did this person express why they wanted to be involved all of a sudden? One mom told me she felt like she was never called to help with stuff-this isn't done through PTO at our school-and that's why she was upset with our group. I found her a volunteer job that suits her needs and she has been extremely helpful but she definately wouldn't have been helpful in a board member capacity because of her schedule.

The irony of commitment is that it’s deeply liberating-in work, in play, in love. The act frees you from the tyranny of your internal critic, from the fear that likes to dress itself up and parade around as rational hesitation. To commit is to remove your head as the barrier to your life. --Anne Morris

We have a nomination process by which every parent is given a form in which they can nominate others for any position on the board. Then the person in charge of the Nominations calls those nominated and asks them whether or not they accept to run for the position or not.

Then elections would be held, but we have never had to have an election in God only knows how many years as no position is ever contested.

Our board members can serve 2 years. The entire current board is serving their first year and all have been nominated to hold their postion for the second year.

The current Prez and nominating head are just unsure of how to handle the situation. Believe me, no one is against her running and this is not some scheme to keep her from running. Being that no one knows who she is (she works a full time job, is never at the school, has never attended a meeting or volunteered for anything). No one is worried that she will beat them in an election if one needs to be held. The story gets even odder in that she nominated herself for every postion on the board! LOL I swear!

So ultimately this is not a huge deal and it will be handled one way or another and I assure you no one is looking to offend or slight this woman in any way. I just wanted to know what others felt about this and to see if anyone has ever had an issue with people nominating themselves. Thanks!

We have a small group and only 2 parents who come to meetings. At our last meeting we decided to send notices asking for volunteers for the board but it is assumed that the 2 current members can stay in their current positions if they so desire because those positions must be filled. Not that I expect anyone to step up for the remaining positions, we have to open them up to all parents and inform the parents of the election. If a parent does step up, then our group will discuss what to do next. Our bylaws aren't specific enough and so we discussed this issue at our last meeting and decided this was the fairest thing we could come up with for our situation. I would think there is nothing wrong with letting a group know you are interested in a position. We can't just pull names out of a hat and know that they even want or can do the work. When we have more than enough parents for election, we are supposed to put names on ballots by position the parent is interested in and then vote from that.

The irony of commitment is that it’s deeply liberating-in work, in play, in love. The act frees you from the tyranny of your internal critic, from the fear that likes to dress itself up and parade around as rational hesitation. Okay...We have a woman who has nominated herself for a position on our board. The person in charge of the nominations believes this is a problem because someone else has to nominate you as you cannot nominate yourself.

This is not in any way about not wanting this person to run. The Nomination committee just wants the process done correctly. Our bylaws do not mention anything about this matter.

Another member also stated that they believe if you follow Robert's Rules of Order that you cannot nominate yourself. Whether that is true or not I do not know.

Someone else nominating her for the position most likely will not happen. No one knows who she is and she has never attended a PTO meeting or volunteered for anything.

Any advice? Opinions? Words of Wisdom?
