How awful that people can ruin something that has the potential of being purely good.
I believe that our group would ask for everything the treasurer has, starting with the checkbook. Even if you have to start from scratch without her that is better than allowing her to continue. 2 signatures is a MUST.
The merchandise she purchased is PTO property (like it or not). I might set a time that I (or a couple of the officers) go over and collect all her PTO stuff.
We had a committee to do a project. They lied, didn't send it in and just sat on it. We insisted on the info being returned and had to submit the project and do the best we could.
Thank You!!!
I can't imagine how much uglier our meeting could have gotten but I am sure if I had used the word "defraud" it would have been worse. Thank you for the post. I'm thinking I might just email this forum to the treasurer and principal and maybe they will get it.
Cellular...it doesn't matter if the money was in the account or not. She didn't have authorization to spend the additional money. Two signatures is a hassle....that's the whole point of it!!!! You have to make it virtually impossible for one person to defraud your group. Your Treasurer should be providing you an updated report of all income and expenses at every meeting. If your last meeting was on 15 Feb 05, then she should provide a report of any financial transactions that occurred at your next meeting since her last report. The Principal can give you any look he or she wants. As a member of the group, you have the right to know the up-to-date financial situation of your group so that you are educated to be able to vote for or against recommended spending. Additionally, if you have $20,000 in your account and no current requirements for that money, do you need to do another fundraiser?? Our group has $8,000 right now and no immediate requirements for expenses. So, we opted not to do a Spring Fundraiser. You need that financial information to be able to make an educated vote. Don't ask for the financial status....Demand it!!!
I'd also like to address the one comment about your the district handling someones checkbook. WHY???? Is your checking account listed under the districts EIN?? If not, they have no reason whatsoever to be involved in the financial matters of your group. You should be a separate entity from them. You are there to represent the school...not the district. Someone needs to look into that and get it corrected.
We had the money in our account but only budgeted $5000.00 for the event. She is the treasurer so she wrote the checks herself. I really believe the stuff is there it's just the fact that she thinks she can run the PTO however she feels reqardess of bylaws and other members. She is against two signatures because she thinks it will be a hassle to find another signer if they need a check "right now".
When we asked her how much our net worth is she can only tell us our overall balance. She and Principal looked at me like I was crazy for asking what our net worth is (after Liabilities) not our gross balance. Am I asking that wrong?
