JHB-We used to start and get out later and yes, our semester did finish after Christmas which is a pain...several parents met with the school board and got the calendar changed by rearranging start/end dates and various days off throughout the year. The main reason was for finals. Kids were having to lug text books around during the holidays to study for finals or if families get transfered, Dec is usually an optimum time and it messed it up to return after the holidays to finish exams. Parents also wanted their kids to be able to do things in the States in the summer, but the late ending time kept them from the cutoffs...sports camps, jobs, college, and so on.
It depends but now that my son is at a traditional school, it's TOMORROW!!! (June 4th) If he was still in the year round multi-track, he would have gotten out end of June and started again in the beginning of August. We have a good enough number of year round schools here too. Traditional schools start end of August.
SFlak, now that Kathie has mentioned it, what is hot in upstate NY? We get into the mid 90's up to 106 in July and August. It's even 80 degrees right now at 10pm in June (windowfan weather but not airconditioning yet) and it's about 10 degrees lower than that up in Tahoe. (25 mins away, lucky me, lucky me!! I'm in Eastern Pa - We're out June 11th and start back the Tuesday after labor day. When we run out of the built in snow days they start taking away the spring break and a day of Presidents Day long weekend. My poor nephew goes to school in Manhatten and will be in school until June 26!!
Loved the comment from SFlak from upstate NY " End of August is pretty hot up here, so I prefer the later start." We lived in upstate NY for four long winters and I think I wore shorts for about a week every year! Guess "hot" depends on what you're used to.
My son got out last week......and my kids are already fighting..fun fun fun summer. Some schools get out this week. We start back up the 2nd week of August
We...my kids...have been home since May 13th!! UGH! They started Aug. 17th. THIS YEAR we start August 23rd and have a later release date.
Hey Joy, we really don't have graduations issues like that, we have less than 20 students graduating. The Admin are looking ahead though and it comes up at Board meetings by Middle school "moms". As far as the mid-term issue, I remember getting asigned huge projects to do over break then coming back to mid-terms! Now I remember why I enjoy being a grow-up!!
Anyway, the school was really regreting the early release date as the date for graduation was weighing so much on weither we could use the new building or not! No stress there!!!!!
