Eliminating Members thru Bylaws

20 years 8 months ago #58307 by crazyorwhat
Do your bylaws state that you follow Robert's Rules of Order? I am by NO means an expert on the subjet, but one thing I have gotten from RRR is that you MUST protect your members. One quote I am using to intro my new "standing Rules" is:
"There is impartiality and fairness. The rule is by law and enactments, not by the whims of the leadership. The rules are applied equally, impartially, and fairly, to all and not just a select few."
I am assuming that you get little to no parental involvement. We also have that problem. My fellow board members want to "bash" the parents but in reality - just sending fliers home is not enough - and we the board bear some responsibility and need to make a real effort to reach out to parents. For example, I am thinking about calling each member and invite them to the election meeting (that would be a job of the nomination committee, but oops no one volunteered to be on it). I guess what I am saying is that you need to A) try to get the pres. to step back and look at the big picture and B) above all protect your membership.
I do agree with everyone else that if the pres' plans go through it will be the beginning of the end for your pto.

"Scared", can you enlighten me? Where is the president coming from with this proposal? What is she hoping to accomplish? I can't really see any benefits to doing it.

I totally agree.....the pto would be done in within a few years...as soon as those board members time ran out or they got tired of doing it, how would you get anyone to replace them? By doing this your president is basically breaking up the pto within a few years....makes no sense.

Can you say clique?

If there are no members other than the board, who votes the board in? How do you ever increase parent involvment if a parent never has the opportunity to come to a meeting and see how you work so they can get "the bug" to become involved?

I think the board's time would be better spent looking at how they operate and figuring out why parents aren't involved and then finding ways to change that!

Hey Rocky, watch me pull a rabbit out of my hat.

Our PTO President wants to change the bylaws to state that the PTO consists of board members only. Aside from loosing what little parent involvement we already have wouldn't this negate the point of a Parent Teacher Organization???
