Question: What guidance does the law provide specific to PTO's?

We have a well established PTO that has been around for several years. We have Articles of Incorporation, by-laws, and have applied for 501(c)(3) status. One thing we I keep hearing from certain people (outside of the PTO) is that we can do certain things we have been doing because they are against PTO "laws". Are there sections in federal and/or state laws that govern PTO's specifically or are our by-laws our only guide?

Hi Doug,
As a 501c(3), your group will need to adhere to 501c(3) general guidelines, which address such things as what your group can and can not donate to. Your group is also governed by its bylaws and there also may be school-district rules or guidelines for PTOs in your community. Not sure what the "PTO laws" may be that these folks are referring to. It may be more language to question something your group has done, but it sounds like you are top of things.
