Question: PTO Legally match funds?
Can a PTO legally match funds of a fundraiser for a child at our school who passed away? Our school staff and PTO are trying to work together to raise money for this family. We thought of selling candy and whatever amount we made from candy sales...the PTO would match it up to $1000. Someone wondered if we could legally do that? We did tell parents that PTO money went back to the school when we had the other school fundraisers. Could we match funds if it is going toward a family in need? Do we risk our tax exempt status?
