Question: Religous school PTL - More info
To further explain my previous question - I am the PTL president of a Lutheran school and we are completely governed by the principal and teachers. They veto many of our fundraising ideas and have control of all our funds raised. Someone suggested that the reason for this is that it is a religious school. I'm just wondering if anyone else out there is experiencing this and finding it is due to the type of school. I'm working on separating us a bit and having our own identity so we can fundraise more freely.

mom4grosso writes:I was a president of a Catholic PTO (Home & School association) and all parents were considered members, and the Principal; is a non- voting member. We have our own BY-Laws that protect our independence from the teachers and administration. That being said, the Pastor and Principal always have the opportunity to "STRONGLY STEER" us away from certain ideas. Most cases tho, we are able to vote and go with our own judgment. Hope this helps.

badpants writes:Pretty much ditto to mom4grosso, with the exception that I have not been the president. But I do think you are onto something as it pertains to the Lutheran schools. I have friends at 3 different Lutheran schools in my area and what you describe seems to be the case at all of them, in varying degrees. Are there other Lutheran schools in your area that you could talk with parents to get a feel for? One of the things that I have always lobbied for, but never seem to get it going, is an area conference of sorts. I think it would be great for all the catholic (or lutheran) schools in an area to get together to exchange/share ideas! We all face similar conflicts and it would be great if another school could inspire a great solution! Pipe dream, I know.
