LDM4kids we have a reading night coming up in February too. Since February is also Chocolate lovers month we are hosting a We Love Books & Chocolate night. Who can resist chocolate, right? We are asking our social committee to bake chocolate desserts and a local candy store is doing a chocolate tasting. Then we are doing all the usual crafts and book reading stations. Oh yeah, and we are doing a chocolate bar fundraiser table there too. Thought we'd try something a little different.

Last fall, we hosted "Line Up For Literacy" which was a family literacy night with a football theme. We had 20ish different literacy stations with a football twist. My goal, with this theme was to encourage all kids, including the boys, to be fired up about literacy. It worked! We had a great turn out. In addition to all of the literacy stations, we also had our high school football players and cheerleaders (in uniform)read aloud in the library and hand out football pencils, our high school drum line perfomed at our "half time" of the event, and our high school pom pon squad made a run through tunnel and did their half time dance. Our stations hit all aspects of literacy! Good times.

We are doing a Family Reading night in February and the theme is "for the love of books." We are tying into into valentine's day.

Our reading night theme was It's a bird, it's a plane, it's a Book. Book stations centered around heroes.

We are tying our Family Reading Night into our Scholastic Book Fair too. We sponsor the book fair all week during school hours but will bring the carts to the gym the night of the fair. Many parents who work do not get the opportunity to shop the book fair; now they can! Our's is a simple theme of sharing stories, like you would around a camp fire. Families can bring blankets to sit on. We live in Charleston, SC so we are having a dynamic Gullah (native African Americans who live in the lowcountry) storyteller come to open the event. A mock fire is being built in the middle of the gym floor (logs, tissue paper and flashlights). We are offering simple snacks of s'mores snack mix which we are making ourselves and bagging (chocolate chips, mini marshmallows, and goldfish grahams) with bottled water for free. After the story telling, kids can make bookmarks or sit in the reading corner where MS students will partner up with the elementary ones and read to them or families can enjoy a book together. Then everyone can depart home ready for bedtime!
