03/28/06 As a committee ask your principal if you could meet with him and ask him what movies he finds appropriate for your particular school. He may be the type that wants to be involved and feels he isn't. If it's inapropriate in the eyes of your group, go to him with different movie suggestions or with the one you'd like to show and ask him if you could take a vote. Sometimes getting the staff or students involved is the best way to solve a problem. You can make a list with a few popular PG movies and let them select which movie they'd like the best and enter their votes in a sealed box. Then everyone or more people get involved. We always stick with the G movies. The upper graders, 4th and 5th usually enjoy the evening regardless. I think it is more about spending time with their families and their friends than about what they watch. They seem happy no matter what we show.
My school is in MA and we are looking to have a movie night in June outside on our baseball field. In the past, our town has rented a screen from Boing games. The screen was great and each time the event was a huge success. Unfortunately, Boing has sold the screen and I have not been able to locate a reasonable alternative rental company. I believe Boing was around $500 for screen rental. If anyone is aware of an inflatable screen rental company or an alternative to using the inflatable screen that would work well for outside viewing please let me know.
We have showed both PG and G movies at our other town-wide events and they were all well received. I'm hoping to show Happy feet at our event!
We show 2 movies, an older movie in the auditorium, and a younger movie in the cafeteria. We have the youger kids bring their pillows and blankets. We also bring mats from the gym into the cafeteria.
On each flyer, we include the link to Movie Mom's review (on Yahoo) for the parents to review.
We also preview any PG movie. In addition, we make sure the principal is comfortable with it. We have shown Star Wars, Harry Potter, Unfortunate Events, and Narnia. It was amazing how many parents came to see them. We would not consider movies like Old School, American Pie, etc.
The best thing to do is to communicate clearly with the parents what the movie is so they can decide if it is appropriate for their student.
Keep in mind parents that any family fun night held at the school should have parents attending WITH their students. If the parents don't want their children attending due to the movie rating, they won't go. The announcement sent home should clearly state the rating and the reason for the rating. But, honestly, parents are bringing young children to PG movies all the time. Unfortunately, I've seen them at movies rated R and the movie was TOTALLY inappropriate for an elementary or middle school child.
Keep the movie night for only children of certain grades and send an informative memo home to parents. It's their decision as to whether they wish to attend.
I think your idea to show a movie that follows up what they are currently doing in school is wonderful.
We held our night last month when Open Season was released. it is PG. We made sure to include that info in our fliers home along with a website for the parents to check out why it is rated that way etc. It is up to the parents if they want their kids to attend that way. Most of the new realeases any more are PG. By the way we had a great turn out and it was a blast!!! Good luck!
