We do many ice cream parties.
Have two tables and two lines, one with choc. and one with vanilla. (not close to each other)
Put the same toppings on each table and have volunteers behind the table serving to cut down on messes. Our open house is for parents only and they are all on diets! We do picky stuff, but they are all in a hurry to get home. They teachers have the parents for 15min and then they move on to another chid's teacher. We hve sign up posters on the walls for committee sign ups and that cuts down on table crowding. People love that!!!
Thanks to everyone for their input. We took Critter's advice and contacted McDonald's about the juice. They are donating cups and juice!
Now we're left with how much ice cream to purchase. We have about 475 students and all family members are invited. We're buying the large tubs of ice cream and thought 5 would be a good start.
As far as volunteers, the board members will be the only people helping so we may limit our toppings. Maybe split the members between 2 tables, one for ice cream the other for topping help. We can switch if we get tired of scooping! We didn't want to ask for parent volunteers for this as parents will be touring the school and talking with their teachers. We have 7 board members that will be helping, plus some of our husbands.
This is next Tuesday so I'll let all of you know how it goes!

How do you determine how much ice cream to get? We have a school with about 450 kids, but there will be parents and siblings there too. I can't find any way to figure this out. Also has anyone had luck with asking for bulk containers from a place like baskin robbins?
Ours is tomorrow evening. the open house is sponsored by the school, with the PTO there to support the teachers. We do the ice cream social in waves, also. The lower grades and 2/3 ID have ice cream first while the older grades are touring the school and vice versa.
The bulk of the school does come to this event. It really gets the kids excited fort he first day of school the following day
