JMO; Mother's building or doing a sporting event is the equivalent of a father/daughter dance. MOST guys don't like to dance, but they do it for their daughters. Ditto, moms will do for sons." Personally, I love to try my hand at new things and I LOVE FOOTBALL!!!!! Also, remind the gal that when you look in the stadiums at games, there are quite a bit of woment there.
Or, just take a poll of the mothers. It can be as simple as standing at the door during an event and asking them as they walk by what they would like. Don't forget to ask the boys, too, because if they are interested in doing something, most moms will go out of their way to encourage that enthusiasm.

I guess this question goes to carolannod I am very interested in how you went about the mom&son bakeoff. Did you have registration for the event before hand, did you give out prizes for 1st,2nd etc? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

We used to run mother-son bowling, but felt that there was not a lot of interaction between the moms and sons (invariably the boys were on one lane and the moms on the next one.) So last year we ran a Mother Son Picnic at the school; we had sign up sheets for various events - kickball, volleyball, basketball, field events, and you signed up for the various time periods with a group of your friends and their kids(like pick up games but more organizied.) The moms and kids had a blast playing together (this year we'll probably add boccee). We served heros and pizza, and ran a Mother Son bake-off contest (which had over 300 entrants.) Teachers were judges. Each boy went home with a souvenier baseball that said "Mother Son Picnic" and each pair had their picture taken as well. Got so much positive feedback that we will be holding the event again next spring.
