We approach most "events" with a break-even or less mentality. We save fundraising for fundraising and everything else is part of the budget or covered by minimal cost. These things include: beginning of year ice cream social, spaghetti dinner, pancake breakfast, carnival, etc. If they are money-makers (like our spaghetti dinner and pancake breakfast) most of the food gets donated and all proceeds go to a cause (Media Center, less-fortunate families, etc.) Our Muffins and Donuts events were free to everyone and just a cost to our budget so everyone can attend.

I think it's how you market it. If it's a fundraiser, market it as such. If it's an event for fun or for a cause, market it as such.

Yes its true, the girls all they do is dance together. Dads just stand around like fifth wheels. Family nights (regardless of activity) are a better choice and no one takes offense at not being invited or welcomed.

We wanted to so this at our school. But I was told we would step on to many toes. Meaning the religous thing we have two many different denominations. My husband and I offered to DJ for free. We have a business doing it for weddings and such. Our local community center has the same events. Which we DJ. They have games, snacks and have a photographer take a picture of the father and daughter together as a keepsake or mom and son. It is a huge success.
So if you can get your school to agree to do it go for it. Maybe you can find a parent that is a DJ to do it at a discount or for free.

Why not do a special adult friend if they don't have a father. With our grandparent luncheon that is how we push it.

Our father/daughter dance idea caused WW III at our school. Everyone had an opinion about fatherless girls and divorced parents. It brought to light all kinds of hidden agendas: PTO power hungry vs disbanding PTO. I would never bring this topic up again! My advice is to stick with entire family functions, they are fair to everyone.
