Silk, multi-patterned shirts for men. Farah Fawcett or Dorothy Hamill hair for the girls and perms for men. Jordache Jeans with the big comb in the back pocket.
I think Gloria Gaynor, Rick James, Village People (and outrageous costumes in general) crocheted ponchos and dresses, big gawdy flowers in the girl's hair, crystal chandeliers, rainbow colored flashing lights and big neon signs. even better a rainbow colored flashing dance floor but this a probably not in the budget! Of course, if you want it like Studio 54, you can hang a giant Half-moon up, minus the coke spoon of course...
I think disco balls and strobe lights, polyester, bell-bottoms and big collars on shirts. The Hustle. Gold lamae and mylar. Zodiac sign medallions and big gold necklaces. Songs like Car Wash, Ring My Bell, Knock on Wood and some great funk tunes that came out around then.
Colors for disco--I can't really think of any unless it was shiny or gauche--think lime green. Mylar would be in line as well. Glitter!! I remember horrible light blue eyeshadow.
Don't forget to have velvet ropes and a bouncer to "decide" who's cool enough to get in!
Snacks I automatically think Pringles and Cheese Doodles--probably because those were my favs during the 70's (am I dating myself?). Also TANG, Gobstoppers, Bugles and FONDUE!!!! Chex Party mix and Swedish Meatballs also come to mind. Speaking of Studio 54 cocaine also comes to mind but I think that's going a bit too far with keeping with the theme.
A friend of mine had a Tony Manero "Strutting" Contest at a party.
Gotta have lights and the black and white dance floor or something like it. You know what? I would watch Saturday NIght Fever again and any of those other disco movies! Don't forget roller skating was HUGE! I do remember rainbows and really bright colors in clothing.
YEARBOOKS from the 70's!!! Would your high school have some or your friends/family?? I know my cousins would be a great source (yeah...still kinda young to really remember the 70's) most of them graduated in then.
Okay I know there are so many of you with great ideas and I am thinking of Disco Ideas, we have hired a DJ that is giving the kids disco ball necklaces. I really want to make a wow with decorations...I mean what colors spells out disco? What represents disco to you. How about snacks? I do have a lighted disco ball that I will probably be using, need to check on codes and all that stuff! Let me know, for some reason I am drawing a total blank!!
