We have done a "Reading Challenge" the last two years at our middle school. We do not do it as a fundraiser, however, it could easily be incorporated into a fundraiser.

2010-2011 school year:
In January 2011 our principal challenged the students to read 11527 books by Field Day. If all books were read, the principal (and other staff) were in a dunk tank. Students were ranked on the number of books read and were given the opportunity to sign up to dunk their favorite teacher. The amount of books to be read was developed by the year (11) and the date of field day (527)

2011-2012 school year:
In March, the principal challenged the students to read 5250 books (8 weeks worth of reading) and on field day the principal will kiss a pig. HOG WILD FOR READING is the theme. Our local Harley Davidson dealer is also bringing motorcycles to the event. (for show only) I don't know how the 5250 was derived but it has something to do with the number of students and a pledge for the amount of time per day that the students will read (fuzzy math equation)

For donations, you could ask parents to pledge 25 cents (or whatever they are comfortable with) for each book read or each 100 pages read (if they are older students). Ask parents/students to solicit donations from family members/friends that would support the cause. Visit local businesses in the area and see if they would also make donations towards the cause. Have a clear vision for what the funds will be used for. Can a portion of the proceeds help increase classroom libraries or the school library? Do you have a local senior community? Perhaps folks who live there would be interested in "adopting" a student in their reading goal. There are lots of ideas on how to raise the funds. Remember, though, that the first year is typically not as successful as future years (lots of hindsight after the first event). Make the goal TRACKABLE as well as VISUAL for the students. And if you are going to complete this over several months, allow parents to donate as they go. Some families want to help and participate but are on a tight budget. It might be easier for them to send in the money every two weeks than at the end of the 3 months.

For the 2-4-6 program where are you getting 24 dollars for 15 min a day with 4 sponsors at $1 an hour? I come up with 14 dollars total. 15 min a day x 14 days(2weeks) is 3.5 hours $3.50 per sponsor x 4 sponsors is $14.00. What am I missing?
