I totally forgot about the big "C" - skin cancer! When kids get older, it's harder to convince them to wear sun screen. (until it's too late and they're burned like a lobster!)
Even the misuse of tanning beds around prom time!
I'll work on this over the summer and report leads as I get them.
Are you going through the health dept, a hospital, etc? My daughter was "ambushed" by a make-up consultant at a slumber party. Wasn't too happy about it about she recieved some great samples and information, just would have liked a heads up (she would have gone but I would have sent her with some cash and more info!)!
I love the donation ideas, I would see if Bath and Body Works, Mary Kay, even see what a dermatologist will do!
I agree with Serendipity-you should go beyond acne and talk about all skin care issues. It would be good for the parents to hear about taking care of themselves(checking for suspicious moles and such). Also the parents are the ones who have to foot the bill for the dermatologist and the treatments(my parents can attest to that, I used Accutane when it was just released to the market). If your parent group is still hesitating on doing the project, perhaps you could get with the health teacher and get it included in that curriculum. Speaking from personal experience, having acne can be a traumatic thing for a teenager, especially a girl. The advances in the field of treatment have been tremendous and no child should have to suffer with the "pizza face" comments and scarring that can occur from serious cases.
I would definitely call it something like a Great Skin Clinic. I would focus on not just acne, but also protecting your skin from sun and skin cancer. I think some kids might not want to attend if it is just billed as an acne thing. It could be embarassing for them. I would go see a local dermatologist and see if you can get them to donate their time in coming to talk to the kids about overall good skin care. I think it would be fairly easy to get a dermatologist to do it. It is free publicity for them and could help them drum up some customers. I would also write letters to companies that produce skin care products(acne stuff, sunscreen, & moisturizers) and ask them to donate samples that can be given to the kids. Oil of Olay & ponds usually do huge distribution of Sample face products. I would probably go after Johnson & Johnson for sunscreen.
Good Luck! If you do it let us know how it goes.
Yeah, Middle School is rough - the kids bodies are out of wack. There is such a wide range of development in these three grades, however, one thing is happening. Acne.
Got any ideas on how I could pull off an "Acne Clinic?" Everyone hates it. However, at 40+, I even STILL get it!
What could it be called - a clear skin clinic? or ???
Maybe it could give the pros/cons of the accutane treatments, etc??
