Hi Theresa,

Wanted to check in to see how things are going! How did your meeting go and any luck with doing a teacher survey?

Hi Teresa,

Sounds like you are well on your way!

Another point is to enlist your principal as a partner in helping to establish your parent group. If the principal is open to this, he or she could also let you know about upcoming volunteer opportunities.

We also have some nice resources on working with the principal:

Hi Rose,

We do not have a Parent Group at our school. It dissolved last year along with several other groups. This year all we have are a few remaining parents who work specifically on fundraising. This morning a few of us, inquired about restarting a parent group, which the office staff said is a great welcome and they support.

To answer a question of yours, the school did send out and have available, a questioniare to find out what level of interest, if any some of the parents have. My thought on this is great, but what happens to those forms and how are they utilized to benefit the teachers and school. One thing that I did notice and have since emailed the coordinator, is even if a parent is not available to make it to a meeting that is help first thing in the morning but they are still interested in finding out what is happening with the fundraising efforts, to please send an email asking for updates.

So as of right now that is where we stand, I'm working on a simple flier for this weeks meeting and I'm going to have handouts for parents when they stop to get their children and invite them to our meeting.

My other thought is to have something 2xs a month where we all come together to meet for an hour or so and visit and talk about what each of the classes are doing and if see an area that the teachers may need some volunteers to help them out. Just food for thought.

Thanks,
Teresa

Hi tmtoledo!

Welcome!

I'll start off by pointing you to some documents and templates that you can download and use for connecting with teachers so you can get a sense of how to help them and work with them. These are on our File Exchange: www.ptotoday.com/filesharing/category/82-teacher-survey. You'll find some great stuff here for surveying your teachers, which is a great way to get their feedback.

In more general terms, are you thinking about starting up a parent group at your school or are you going to work more informally with parents?

If you were planning to start up a group, I''ll point you to an article we have on the site for starting up a PTO: www.ptotoday.com/pto-today-articles/arti...7-how-to-start-a-pto

If you are looking for ways to more casually connect with parents, we'd suggest putting together some kind of low-key family event at the school. It would give you and other interested parents an opportunity to connect with other parents, seek out some other volunteers and give the whole school a sense of community. Given that you do have a small school, you could try a pot luck dinner. That way, you wouldn't have to worry too much about raising funds to cover costs.

Hope this is at least a good start! Please stay in touch and let us know how you are making out,

Best of luck!

Hi!

I think what you wrote is already very good! It would make a nice short letter or email for all of the teachers and I bet they would love to know there is a small but dedicated group of parents supporting them! So I would advise you just to write from the heart and appoint someone to be the spokesperson for the group who would also be willing to receive suggestions and comments from the teachers, and make sure the teachers have their email or phone number.

If you can get a parent representative from each class, they should each devise a way to meet with the other parents. They could get together at Starbucks, or host a tea in their home, whatever works for them. Even coordinating an email chain is better than nothing! Just make sure that they understand that no matter how small or large the school, you will almost never get 100% participation, and that's okay.

Good luck!
