I'd like to start a website for my school's PTA also. Of the different services already mentioned, can you tell me which ones allow multiple access to make changes to the site? I don't want to be the only one who can make updates to it. And of course eventually when I move on, I need to easily hand it off to someone else.
Also, those of you who have websites, what are the categories/sections on the site you think are essential to a PTO/PTA site? I will need to propose this to the group and want to have the idea ironed out a bit to show them the need to have our own site.
We have had so much trouble trying to get anything going on the school's Web page, that we went to wordpress.com for a free blog. It is very interactive, it's free and we have included all the links to our fund-raisers on it. For about $100 more, you can have more features. But with this, I've been able to upload the drawing of our new car magnet. I can also add photos.

I've looked at those, and they look great, but we like the short and sweet site name we have. Most people at the school go to our site first and go to the school's site from there.
Has anyone ever subscribed to a web-hosting service that caters specifically to parent groups and has all the templates already set up, perhaps even allowing financial transactions to take place via the site? I've never created a site myself and am computer literate but don't have the time to fiddle around with layouts and all. A couple of years ago there was an advertiser here on PTOtoday that offered just such a service, but I'm not sure they're still viable -- at least it doesn't seem like they developed a very strong following.

I just want to point out that even though register.com charges for the site, we own a very simple domain name. "menlopto.com"
The school's address is so looooonnnnggg we wanted a site that everyone could remember, we could put in all of our mailings and it's on the school's sign out front.
Something you might want to think about if you've got the funds to pay for it. $150 a year isn't a lot.
