School Issues & PTA Involvement Advise Needed!

17 years 6 months ago #132292 by tisptamom
We are a new PTA this year and have been doing really good. We have brought in Character Counts, have had a family dance, Book Fair, Teacher Appreciation, etc. We have had a hard time involving parents and teachers but we are getting there. Our involvement has not been on any REAL issues and now we have one and the school wants us to stay out of it. The issue is drugs. Our school is 3rd-6th grade. They have busted 4th graders with Marijuana and a 4th grader distributing. Last week they caught 3 6th graders smoking Meth in the bathroom! I sent an email to everyone in our membership telling what was happening and asking suggestions about rule changes on drug issues in the handbook to make to the school board. Someone got this to the Principle and the principle was very affended. He told me that the PTA should remain in positive situations and not get into controversy.

So...I am frustrated! I am in this for my child...to improve her education, be involved in what she is doing, make sure she is SAFE, etc. So when I approach the issue of drugs, I am not supposed to use the PTA name in any way! Isnt this what the PTA is for...the good and the bad?? If I cannot use the PTA to address issues needing change then I am better off doing it all on my own! Am I wrong in my thinking??
